Two months ago, San Marcos’ annual family-friendly event, Corndog Day faced extinction. Now, with the help of the local community, Corndog Day has been saved.
The Corndog Day Association, that partially funded National Corndog Day, has disbanded and can no longer provide discounts to communities who want to host a Corndog Day-themed event. Prior to this disbandment, hosts were offered party packages for a third of the price.
“Today we can proudly declare that Corndog Day is saved, thanks to local support, the work of Aaron Arguien and the Main Street Program,” Mayor Daniel Guerrero announced Friday.
Arguien has been hosting Corndog Day at his own home since 2003 and brought the event to Main Street and downtown two years ago. “Corndog Day has been very special to the community,” he said. “I’m really glad that it was able to be saved.”
Corndog Day will take place on March 19 from 12-4 p.m. during Art Squared on the Hays County Courthouse lawn.
“We couldn’t justify getting rid of Corndog Day this year despite the disbanding of the national organization,” Samantha Armbruster, Main Street Program Manager said. “We reworked the budget a bit to make this event possible for families in San Marcos.”
The event is free, open to the public and will feature a corndog eating contest, crowning of corndog royalty, corndog-themed activities and a limited amount of free corndogs.
National Corndog Day has been celebrated in San Marcos since 2003 and moved to Downtown San Marcos in 2014, becoming a loved and much anticipated event drawing thousands of people to the downtown district each year. Since 1992, this event has been held nationwide in conjunction with March Madness and featured corndogs, basketball, party favors and games for the whole family. According to National Corndog Day’s website, “National Corndog Day is the ultimate celebration of America’s love of basketball and meats on sticks.”
