Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.
The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit their Official Public Web Site.
Martindale 4th of July Parade
The 4th of July parade, which took place in the center of Martindale, TX, was bigger and better than ever.
Many locals came out to enjoy the festivities including Martindale Mayor Robert Deviney, San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson, and Congressman Lloyd Doggett. The Del Valley High School marching band, carts, floats, bikes, and even horses were in the parade.
Many people and organizations helped make the parade run smoothly including the Boy Scots that were parade runners and the security and corrections students from the Gary Job Corps Center that assisted with traffic flow and parking.
Lockhart ISD Tours Gary Job Corps
Representatives from Lockhart ISD toured the HVAC and electrical trades at the Gary Job Corps Center this week.
They spoke with staff and students to discuss what is taught in the trades and what certifications could be obtained by youth in the Lockhart ISD area if they enrolled into Job Corps. Mark Estrada, Superintendent said he was impressed with the passion that staff showed for teaching.
Melissa Royer, CTE/Accountability Coordinator said she really liked speaking with the students and was amazed at how they were able to articulate what they were learning. Gary Job Corps Center students visit with Judge Becerra
The Gary Job Corps Center’s HOPE Group (Helping Other People Excel) visited Judge Ruben Becerra during a meet and greet for his 100 days in-office event. Several elected officials and local citizens attended the meeting at the courthouse.
Judge Becerra spoke about monthly events, resolution of the pipeline, the revolving door policy/disclosure form, criminal justice reform, and emergency management.
Judge Becerra stated the county wants to be fully transparent; to make themselves visible and accessible. Mayor Jane Hughson was also in attendance and the HOPE Group got to make introductions.
Toyota and TD Industries Tour Gary Job Corps
Representatives from Toyota and TD Industries toured the Gary Job Corps Center today to observe the machinist, welding, and carpentry trades. The two companies are looking at employing Gary Job Corps graduates and partnering with the center for work-based learning opportunities.
