Animal Shelter Kicks Off ‘Home 4 The Holidays’ Specials

San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter has teamed with thousands of animal organizations from around the world to participate in the annual Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive, founded by Helen Woodward Animal Center.

To celebrate the campaign’s kickoff, the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter invites the community to Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month Oct. 1 – 31 at The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter’s Adoption Center.

During the Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month every adoptable dog’s adoption fee will be discounted to only $20! The adoption will include the sterilization, rabies vaccination, de-worming, general health check, micro-chipping, and testing for heartworms. In addition the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter will have select animals’ adoption fees 50% off during the entire campaign from Oct.1 through Jan. 2, 2017.

“In an average year we see thousands of misplaced or homeless animals. I think it is so important that we, as a community, step up to make sure shelter animals are getting a fair shot at a happy, forever home,” said Erin McCann, Animal Shelter Supervisor. “We are so proud to be a part of this amazing campaign and are dedicated to placing these animals in homes that will love and care of them for what we sincerely hope to be the rest of their furry little lives!”

Home 4 the Holidays, which runs from Oct. 1, 2016 through Jan. 2, 2017, unites over 3,500 partner organizations, (in all 50 states and in 23 different countries) with a focused goal of placing orphaned pets into loving homes.

The Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive began with a growing concern for the number of rescue facilities closing their doors during the holiday seasons.  In seeking the perfect holiday gift, would-be adopters were forced to resort to pet stores or puppy mills.

Additionally, pet store staffers, untrained to assess the likelihood of a successful animal/family match, contributed to an increased number of pets sent to shelters once the season was over. The Home 4 the Holidays Campaign asks rescue facilities to get the word out.

The program has grown into the largest pet adoption drive in the world and is credited with saving over 8 million pets across the globe since its inception in 1999.

“The team here at The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter is specially trained and can help families choose the perfect pet for their personalities and lifestyles,” McCann said. “We can’t imagine anything better than an empty shelter because so many loving creatures were adopted to families with a little extra love and care to give this holiday season.”

San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter is located at 750 River Road, San Marcos.  For more information about the organization, please log on to www.sanmarcostx.gov/animaladoptions.
