The holiday season is filled with tradition, feasts, parties, and giving, and Hays County Food Bank invites you to join them in these festivities at the annual Empty Bowl Fundraiser!
The San Marcos High School (SMHS) Art Department and AquaBrew are sponsoring this year’s Empty Bowl Project on #GivingTuesday, November 28th from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. This is the largest giving day of the year, and even Facebook is getting into the spirit by waiving all donation fees that day.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is also matching donations up to $2 million. The food bank team will be on site collecting donations and assisting with online donations through Facebook.
The SMHS art students, under the supervision and guidance of teacher, Thom Rogers, have been busy crafting ceramic bowls for the event. Carlos Russo, owner of AquaBrew and host to this year’s event, is providing chili for the occasion. Guests are invited to choose either a large or a small, handcrafted bowl for a $20 or $10 donation, respectively.
If someone does not wish to take the bowl, they may choose to donate $5 for a bowl filled with chili.
A live concert, featuring the SMHS Jazz Ensemble and Salsa Band, will help get everyone into the holiday spirit. All donations will benefit the food bank’s Turkeys Tackling Hunger campaign, which as it stands is only at 46% of its goal. The food bank is asking for the community’s help to reach 100%!
If you would like to give online on #GivingTuesday, but are unable to attend the event, please visit the food bank’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/haysfoodbank.
In 2016, Hays County Food Bank and its 20+ partner agencies distributed 679,456 pounds of food to an average of 8,500 food insecure residents each month. These residents were senior citizens, children, and many others facing economic challenges. “Food insecurity” refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it. Hays County Food Bank is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the public to perform its mission.
