Anything That Floats River Race to be Held at 72* Festival

The first annual Keep San Marcos Beautiful Anything That Floats River Race will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 72* Festival in San Marcos Plaza Park, 401 E. Hopkins, located at the corner of CM Allen Parkway and Hopkins. The first launch is at noon.

Participants in teams of one, two, three and four will build wacky boats out of materials that can be found around their homes, such as cardboard, wood, PVC, duct tape, and other materials. Team captains will be responsible for the proper salvage and disposal of their craft after the race.

“The goal of the race is to promote river awareness and the sustainability initiatives of the Keep San Marcos Beautiful (KSMB) program,” said Amy Kirwin, Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager.

“KSMB consulted with the Habitat Conservation Plan on the creation of the rules and guidelines for the Anything That Floats River Race.”

The race is a timed event, and only one vessel will be in the river at a time. Inspections will be made before a vessel is allowed into the river. There will be volunteers on hand to collect all debris that a vessel loses, and every effort will be made to avoid the Texas wild rice and other endangered species in the river.

The public will have a chance to view all the vessels and vote for the most creative and the most sustainable, and there will be consideration for costumes and team spirit.

There is no entry fee for the race. The deadline to enter is April 28, 2016 by 5 p.m. The online entry form, which includes the rules and guidelines, may be found at http://goo.gl/forms/SIlG1y6OtX and a copy of the rules may be obtained by emailing jmach@sanmarcostx.gov.
