SAN MARCOS – Texas State University has been named a 2017 Tree Campus USA, an Arbor Day Foundation program designation which honors colleges and universities for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.
This marks the seventh consecutive year that Texas State has been so honored by the Arbor Day Foundation.
To obtain the Tree Campus USA distinction, Texas State met five standards for effective campus forest management: a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project.
Texas State holds an Arbor Day celebration annually, and 2017 marked the first year the event took place on both the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses. Since 2011, Texas State has planted more than 150 trees on university grounds during Arbor Day events.
Currently, 344 campuses across the country hold the Tree Campus USA distinction.
