On Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at approximately 7 a.m., APD officers were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash in the 4600 block of Springdale Rd. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a white van engulfed in flames with a single occupant.
The driver of the van, who was later identified as Carlos Swist, was pronounced deceased at 7:41 a.m. The Vehicular Homicide Unit was called to investigate the fatality crash.
During the investigation, evidence was discovered from the van and the victim to suggest that the victim died from a firearm related injury and that was what caused the crash. Homicide Detectives were then called to continue the investigation.
On March 2, 2016 an autopsy was performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
On April 13, 2016 Austin Police arrested Dedric Darnell Dixon for the murder of Carlos Swist. An arrest warrant for Dixon was filed for 1st Degree Murder with the bond being set at $500,000 dollars.
