Austin Airport Planning Multiple Projects For Terminal Expansion, Addition Of Up To 20 New Gates

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) is preparing several procurements for facility expansion and related infrastructure projects in addition to staffing services.

The Barbara Jordan Terminal expansion project will involve pushing out the front of the building and realigning the landside roadway.

One of the first projects to be let will be for a construction manager at risk to create a new 803,000 square-foot midfield concourse, apron, and midfield cross taxiways.

The concourse will add up to 20 gates and link to the existing terminal via a tunnel instead of a bridge. A taxiway delta is scheduled for design in 2023-2024 and construction in 2026 to repave and redevelop a latticework of taxiways.

ABIA also is working with Austin Energy on the airport’s Central Plant and energy needs related to the expansion.

The team developed three options: retrofit the existing plant; build an additional plant and retrofit the existing one, and decommission the original plant and construct one or two new plants.

The Central Plant project is in the preliminary engineering and study phase. A timeline is to be determined, but the project must be complete by the time the new concourse opens.

A request for proposals (RFP) is scheduled later this year to hire two separate prime contractors to supply ABIA with staffing for program management, project controls, risk management, and other services. The RFP closing date will be in July 2020.
