Continuing its commitment to foster the next generation of public artists, Art in Public Places (AIPP), a program of the City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division within the Economic Development Department, announces a call for proposals for TEMPO, its annual temporary public art exhibition. Now in its sixth year, TEMPO offers paid opportunities for artists interested in the field of public art, and a platform for them to explore a range of materials and themes suitable for the outdoor environment. The resulting exhibition provides the community a deeper appreciation of public art through thought-provoking installations that impact and enhance city-owned sites across Austin.
 
TEMPO 2018

AIPP seeks to commission ten temporary public artworks for the 2018 cycle of the TEMPO program. Professional visual artists or artists teams who live and work in Williamson, Travis, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Burnet, and Blanco counties are eligible to apply. The artwork budget for each of the ten commissions is a maximum of $10,000. 
 
One commission each will be awarded in ten of the City’s ten Council Districts. Artists may select from a list of City-owned sites in each district, including parkland, recreation centers and libraries, but must be flexible, as some works may be relocated to a different site within their chosen district, or to a different district altogether.  
 
Artworks will be exhibited at sites across Austin during September, October and November. Artists will then reinstall the artworks at Edward Rendon Sr. Park in District 3 for a public presentation of all the TEMPO 2018 artworks, as a registered group exhibition during the East Austin Studio Tour in November 2018.

The Cultural Arts Division of the Economic Development Department provides leadership and management for the City’s cultural arts programs and for the development of arts and cultural industries. The Cultural Arts Division is responsible for the Cultural Arts Funding Programs, Art in Public Places Program, community-based arts development, and programs to assist the development of film and creative industries in Austin.
 
Founded in 1985, the Art in Public Places (AIPP) program acquires and maintains works of art for City facilities and parks through commissions, donations, and loans for the cultural enrichment of Austin’s community.  By City ordinance, AIPP allocates 2% of eligible capital improvement project funding to the acquisition of site-specific public artwork. 2015 marks the 30th Anniversary of the AIPP program in Austin, the first municipality in Texas to make a commitment to include works of art in construction projects.
