Austin Surpasses Water Conservation Goals, Celebrates Ten Years of Success

To honor the commitment to water conservation by the citizens of Austin and the hard work of Austin Water conservation staff,  City Council is proclaiming June 22, Water Conservation Day. 

The ceremony will take place today at 5:30 p.m. in the Austin City Council chamber.
 
In spite of tremendous population growth and historic drought, Austin has exceeded ambitious water conservation goals set by City Council.

Water use in Austin has dropped to 122 gallons per capita per day (GPCD), down more than 35% from a high of 190 GPCD a decade ago.
 
Following a Council-led task force, in 2007 Austin began to strengthen water conservation programs, efforts to control water leaks and investments in reclaimed water infrastructure.

The success of these water conservation efforts and the support of Austinites helped sustain the City’s water supply through extreme drought and earned Austin Water the top spot on the Texas Living Waters Project’s Water Conservation Scorecard.
 
Today’s proclamation recognizes Austin Water’s commitment to providing a sustainable, reliable water supply for all Austin citizens, now and into the future. For more information about water conservation programs,  visit WaterWiseAustin.org.
