Baylor Evens Season series With Bobcats

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team suffered a 17-5 setback to Baylor Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Bears (23-17) were able to even the season series after the Bobcats (21-19-1) toppled BU 6-1 in Waco on April 2.

TXST initially led 3-0 after the first inning of play and battled into a 4-2 advantage through four complete. The visitors turned up the heat from there, however, plating four in the fifth inning and 11 in the seventh frame to induce the run-rule.

Senior Luke Sherley led the maroon and gold with a 3-for-4 effort that included three RBIs and a run scored. Senior Dylan Paul and junior Jonathan Ortega both added two hits.

Sophomore starting pitcher Zachary Leigh went 4.0 innings on the mound and gave up three runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking one in the no-decision.

Jimmy Winston (1-0) picked up the win for the Bears after giving up one run on five hits in 3.1 innings of relief. Kyle Hill tossed the last two frames for his first save of the season. Starter Ryan Leckich lasted just 1.2 innings after allowing four runs on five hits.

Cole Haring and Davis Wendzel each went 3-for-5 to lead Baylor’s offense.

Wendzel scored twice, and Haring drove in five runs. Nick Loftin, Richard Cunningham, Andy Thomas, Davion Downey and Tucker Cascadden all finished with two hits. Downey had four RBIs and two runs scored, while Lofton and Cunningham both had two RBIs and two runs.

Thomas and Shea Langeliers both scored three times.

Texas State will look to rebound with a 6 p.m. home clash April 25 against Prairie View A&M.
