Black History Month, Spring Vegetable Gardening Among Events Happening At San Marcos Library

Remembering Hardge’s Hornets: A Remarkable Story of Discipline, Skill, and Perseverance

The San Marcos Public Library and the Calaboose African American History Museum invite you to a Black History Month program that profiles Coach Alonzo Hardge’s Hornets, a Pony League baseball team that finished undefeated in the 1964 season.

Several surviving members of the Hornets will be present to share memories of their extraordinary achievement. Elvin Holt, director of the Calaboose Museum, will serve as presenter and facilitator.

Passport to Reading Challenge and Chat: #ownvoices

February’s challenge is to read an #ownvoices book. In case you are not familiar with the term, #ownvoices is a hashtag that was created by Corinne Duyvis to highlight books written by an author that shares a marginalized identity with the protagonist.

For example, a book with a deaf protagonist written by a deaf  author is #ownvoices. Join us for our Book Chat. Bring your ‘Brown Bag’ lunch, chat about books, and enjoy a special guest speaker.

Master Gardeners: Spring Vegetable Gardening

Master Gardener Suzanne Love develops and maintains pollinator and vegetable gardens, and is also a vegetable specialist.

During this interactive discussion, she will ex­plain the importance of proper plan­ning, site and soil preparation, plant selection and planting guide, and other tools and tips for a bountiful harvest.
