Black’s Barbecue Pitmaster Dies At Age 91

Black’s Barbecue announced Sunday the restaurant’s pitmaster, Edgar Black Jr. died over the weekend in Lockhart, Texas.

Black died at the age of 91 in his home Friday, June 2. The restaurant’s Facebook page says he was “surrounded by family and friends.”

Visitation were held tonight at the McCurdy Funeral Home, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The funeral service is tomorrow, Tuesday, June 6, at 3 PM at the First Methodist Church.

Black’s BBQ was opened in 1932 by Black’s father, Edgar Black Sr., and is now run by Black Jr.’s son, Kent Black.

The family-owned business has a location in Austin and in Lockhart and was featured in the Texas Monthly’s “50 best BBQ Joints…In the World!”

The restaurant announced on twitter and Facebook that it will be closed Tuesday in honor of the funeral.

The Black’s BBQ released this statement on Facebook.

“We miss you and are forever grateful for your love, generosity, and so much more. Thank you for everything you taught us and the legacy you left for us to live up to.”
