Bobcat Football Team Shows Balance In First Scrimmage

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State head football coach Dennis Franchione felt that both of his offensive and defensive units had their moments during Thursday’s 106-play intra-squad scrimmage at Bobcat Stadium. The scrimmage concludes the first half of Texas State’s spring practice and the Bobcats will have the next eight days off for spring break.

“I saw a lot of good things and we did some things a little ragged, which is to be expected in a scrimmage with eight practices,” said Franchione. “The guys competed hard and it will be some really good film with which we can teach and coach. Hopefully, this will help us to really improve as we head into the last seven practices.”

The Bobcats scored 34 points on offense as junior quarterback Tyler Jones completed 13 of 17 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Connor White also saw time with both the second and first-team offenses while completing 12 of 21 passes for 121 yards and a TD. Blaire Sullivan also completed five of his seven passes for 28 yards and a TD while directing the third-team offense.

On the ground, Stedman Mayberry also had a good day running as he rushed for 54 yards on eight carries with the first-team offense.

However, the day began with the defense holding the offense on downs during the first five drives and forcing a fumble on the sixth.

“Defensively, I thought a lot of guys made some good hits today,” said Franchione. “We had a couple of takeaways and the defensive line did some good things up front to cause some problems for the offensive line.”

After the fumble, the first-team offense drove down the field 46 yards for the first touchdown of the day when Jones hit Lawrence White for a 21-yard TD pass. White ended the scrimmage with three catches for 57 yards.

After the defense held both offenses without a first down on each of the next three drives, Jones hit Demun Mercer for a 46-yard TD pass.

White also threw for another touchdown when he led the first-team offense on a 65-yard touchdown drive. He opened the drive with a 20-yard pass to White and hit Ryan Garreyfor a 40-yard pass down to the defense’s five yard line. After the defense held on the next two plays, he hit Brandon Smith for the TD pass.

Sullivan also hit Tim Gay for a three-yard TD pass after he led the third-team offense on a 55-yard scoring drive.

James Sherman also kicked a pair of field goals inside the 40-yard line and was successful on three of his four extra-point tries. The only miss came on the final TD when his kick was blocked.

Texas State will return to spring practice on March 24 and the Bobcats will play their annual Maroon-Gold Spring Game on April 4 at Bobcat Stadium. That game will kick off at 1 p.m.
