Bobcat Soccer Downs Sunbelt Defending Champion Jaguars

TXST got onto the scoreboard early in the ninth minute that began with a through ball from Jordan Kondikoff up the middle.

MOBILE, Ala. – The Texas State soccer team stunned the five-time defending Sun Belt Conference Champions South Alabama 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the Cage. It was the Bobcats’ first-ever win over the Jaguars in the seventh meeting all-time.

With the victory, TXST is at .500 on the season at 5-5-0 and sit atop the Sun Belt standings at 3-0-0 while USA drops to 3-7-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.

TXST got onto the scoreboard early in the ninth minute that began with a through ball from Jordan Kondikoff up the middle.

Kaylee Davis used her speed to outrace the defender to the ball and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper’s hands into the upper left corner. It was her seventh goal of the season and matched her total from last season.

Davis had another great look in the 26th minute. She again outraced a defender to the ball and took a crack at goal but the goalkeeper made a diving stop.

Heather Martin came up with two big saves over the final 20 minutes of the opening half. In the 29th minute, she dove and stole the ball right off the foot of a USA player at the 6-yard box.

The junior followed by tipping the ball to herself when a Jaguar headed the ball towards goal off a corner kick in the 35th minute.

The second half was controlled by USA with an 11-2 shot advantage. Martin made seven saves in the period with four coming in the final 10 minutes.

One of her biggest was her last one with 1:04 left on the clock, the junior stayed big and the Jaguar’s shot hit off her hands to her left. She was able to hustle back and fall on the ball before it crossed the goal line.

Davis took half of the Bobcats’ eight shots in the contest and had the only two attempts on goal. Also taking a shot attempt were Sarah Everett, Kayla Geren, Haley Groff and Kondikoff.

Martin matched her career-high with 10 saves on the afternoon. She also recorded 10 stops last year in San Marcos against the Jaguars.

Next up for TXST is a two-match home weekend beginning Friday at 7 p.m. against Little Rock
