Bobcat Women’s Tennis Signs Two

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women’s tennis Head Coach Tory Plunkett announced Thursday that Julia Navajo Melendez and Alex Jones have signed to play for the Bobcats in 2016-17.

“Both players are transfers who have established some success on the NCAA Division I level,” Plunkett said. “Julia played in the top half of the lineup at Nicholls State, while Alex is coming from a highly successful program on the West Coast. I expect both of them to add some experience and strengthen the top of our lineup.”

Both players had winning records in doubles play during the 2016 spring campaign. A native of Segovia, Spain, Navajo Melendez had an 8-6 overall record, including a 5-5 mark as a member of the top doubles team at Nicholls State. In addition, she posted a 9-14 overall record in singles matches this spring.

Jones comes to Texas State after playing on conference championship teams at Long Beach State during each of the past two seasons. A native of Essex, England, she had a 2-1 record in singles matches and a 7-1 doubles mark in dual matches in 2016 after posting a 4-4 mark in singles matches as a freshman in 2014-15. She was 8-3 overall in doubles matches as a sophomore.

Jones will be one of three players from England playing at Texas State next season. The other two will be seniors Pippa Carr and Eva Dench.
