Bobcats And Eagles To Battle Saturday On ESPN3

Georgia Southern enters Saturday having lost four of its last five games. The lone win during the span was an 85-80 game at home to in-state rival Georgia State last Friday.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men’s basketball team will be going for its first-ever season sweep of Georgia Southern on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 4:30 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum.

The Bobcats enter the game 14-15 overall and 7-9 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Eagles are 17-11 on the season and 8-7 in conference play.

Bill Culhane will have the call on the radio with the game being broadcast on AM1300 The Zone out of Austin and KTSW 89.9 FM out of San Marcos. Fans can also listen to the game through the iHeartRadio and TuneIn Radio apps on their mobile device. Live stats will be available for the game with a link on the team’s schedule page.

The contest will be streamed on ESPN3 with Matt Stewart providing the play-by-play and Bob Donewald as the color commentator.

Nijal Pearson is coming off a 17-point, 7-rebound and 2-steal performance on Thursday. The sophomore is a point shy of reaching 900 career points. For the season, he is averaging 14.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. His 48 made three-pointers are the most on the team as well.

Pacing TXST in field goal percentage (59.7), rebounding (6.0) and blocks (25) is Immanuel King, who is netting 9.3 ppg. He comes in with 63 career rejections and is five shy of tying Kavin Gilder-Tilbury for fifth in program history.

Tyler Blount has connected on a team-high 41.1 percent from beyond the arc with 44 makes. Tre’Larenz Nottingham leads the Bobcats with 2.4 apg after dishing out five against the Panthers on Thursday.

Alex Peacock is averaging 6.6 ppg and 5.0 rpg. He has made a team-high 75.0 percent of his free throw attempts and is second on the team with 31 steals.

Scouting Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern enters Saturday having lost four of its last five games. The lone win during the span was an 85-80 game at home to in-state rival Georgia State last Friday. When playing on the road this season, the Eagles are 7-7 and 4-4 in the Sun Belt. Two of their four conference losses have been by two points while the other two by at least 15 points.

Tookie Brown paces GS in scoring (18.7), assists (4.1), three-point shooting percentage (45.6) and steals (53) while sharing the team lead in free throw percentage (76.5) with Mike Hughes. Brown has made 53.7 percent of his shot attempts and is grabbing 3.9 rpg.

Ike Smith enters averaging 11.6 ppg on 36.8 percent shooting, 26.4 percent from long distance and 55.6 percent at the charity stripe, and 4.4 rpg. Hughes nets 11.1 ppg having made 34.4 percent from the field and 33.1 percent on three-point tries. His 52 made three-pointers are the second most on the team.

Montae Glenn paces the Eagles with 8.3 rpg and is putting up 9.0 ppg on a team-best 54.9 percent shooting. Of his 225 total rebounds, 115 have come on the offensive glass for an average of 4.26 per contest that ranks third in the nation.

The top threat from beyond the arc is Jake Allsmiller. Of his 78 made field goals, 70 have been three-pointers and he is making them at a 35.2 percent clip.

Quan Jackson comes in scoring 7.1 ppg and is second on the team with 38 steals.

All-Time vs. Eagles

Georgia Southern leads the all-time series over Texas State 5-2. In the first meeting this season, the Bobcats hung on for a 62-61 win in Statesboro, Georgia as Nottingham made the game-winning free throw with 3.7 remaining in the game. Pearson finished with team highs of 22 points and eight rebounds.

When playing in Strahan Coliseum, the series is tied 1-1. Dec. 30, 2016, was the last time the two teams met in San Marcos with TXST winning 80-66 behind 19 points from Ethan Montalvo, 16 by Emani Gant and 15 courtesy of Gilder-Tilbury.
