SAN MARCOS, Texas – A season-high 21 points by Ayriel Anderson led the Texas State women’s basketball team to a 67-57 victory over Georgia Southern Thursday evening at Strahan Coliseum. In addition to Anderson’s solid showing, junior center Kileah Mays recorded her third double-double of the season in the victory.
Texas State improves to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. Coming into Saturday’s contest, the Bobcats are riding on a two-game winning streak after earning the 60-53 victory against UT Arlington on Monday.
Both teams struggled to get the wheels rolling in the first half as the first basket of the contest came with 17:34 on the clock by Jacqueline Jeffcoat. Georgia Southern then scored the next six points to take an early 6-2 lead over Texas State.
After a 1-for-9 start, Texas State had a span in which it went 6-for-8 from the floor to take over the lead from Georgia Southern with 10:09 left in the first. The Eagles followed the run up with a basket of their own, but a three-pointer by Taeler Deer with 8:54 on the clock gave Texas State the lead for the rest of the first half.
Texas State finished the first half shooting just under 42 percent from the floor and were led by junior guard Erin Peoples with eight points.
