Bobcats Down Hilltoppers In Hurricane Recovery Exhibition Game

Next up is TXST’s second and final exhibition game of the season on Saturday. The Bobcats will take on Rogers State at 7 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum.

San Marcos, Texas – In an exhibition game that saw proceeds go to the Jefferson County (TX) United Way (https://www.unitedwaymsjc.org/donate) to help people affected by Hurricane Harvey in Beaumont, Texas, the Texas State men’s basketball team defeated St. Edward’s 76-64 Thursday night in Strahan Coliseum.

Nijal Pearson led all players with 21 points and 14 rebounds with half of his boards coming on the offensive end. The Beaumont native was 6-for-15 from the field and converted 9-of-13 free throw attempts. He also had two steals and a block.

Adding 16 points and six rebounds off the bench was Eric Terry. He made 5-of-7 shot attempts and went 6-for-9 at the charity stripe. The redshirt sophomore also blocked a team-high two shots.

Contributing seven points apiece were Tyler Blount, Tre’Larenz Nottingham and Alex Peacock. All three along with Reggie Miller made one three-pointer each.

Marlin Davis dished out a game-high five assists while netting six points and posting two steals.

The Bobcats started the game on a 5-2 run that was capped off on a layup from Nedeljko Prijovic. The Hilltoppers responded by scoring six of the next eight points to take its first lead of the contest. It would be the only lead for the visitors as TXST answered back with an 8-3 spurt.

SEU was able to pull to within one at 20-19 after an old-fashion three-point play from Dorian Lopez. Pearson scored the next four points to give the Bobcats breathing room.

Eventually, TXST took a 10-point advantage when Nottingham knocked down the team’s first three-point of the game with 1:55 left in the first half. He followed by picking the pocket of a Hilltopper near midcourt and converting an uncontested layup.

The second half began with an 11-2 run for the Bobcats. During the scoring stretch, Peacock netted five points. Layups were added by Blount, Pearson and Terry.

A layup by Peacock with 13:22 left in the game put TXST ahead by 21, 58-37, for its largest lead of the contest. The Hilltoppers responded with a 13-1 run over the next 5:37 to cut the Bobcats’ advantage to nine. The lone point for TXST came on a free throw from Terry.

Back-to-back three-pointers from SEU’s Sean Phillips pulled the visitors to within eight with 1:38 showing on the clock. Five of the final six points of the game were scored by the Bobcats to seal the victory.
