Bobcats Focus On Game Situations During Their Second Scrimmage

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team held its second of three scrimmages this fall on Saturday morning when the Bobcats worked on several game-like situations for the second straight day.

The scrimmage began with the Bobcat running their offense while backed up in their own end of the field before starting drives on their 25-45 yard lines. Texas State also focused on third down plays with yardages ranging from 4-8 yards to get a first down before practicing in the red zone and in short-yardage situations at the goal line.

“We worked on a lot of different situations,” said Texas State head coach Everett Withers. “We emphasized a little more of playing in a game for the second straight day. We worked on our two-minute 7 on 7 offense and defense and May Day plays on Friday.”

Following the scrimmage, Withers pointed to his team needing to match the enthusiasm and energy of senior linebacker Teron Fitzgerald and junior walk-on running back Jericho Worrell.

“Teron Fitzgerald epitomized what I like in a player when you say it is game day,” Withers said. “He came out with a lot of excitement and played with a lot of excitement and energy.”

Junior walk-on running back Jericho Worrell also stood out in the scrimmage while running with the third-team offense. He scored a pair of touchdowns and had several long runs.

“He doesn’t always carry the ball with ball security like I would like,” Withers said. “But, if he continues to play like he did today, takes another step and enhances it, then he will have an opportunity (to move into the rotation).”

Withers is looking for the Bobcats can play with more enthusiasm and energy in their final two weeks of fall camp before opening the season at Ohio on Sept. 3.

“Teron Fitzgerald and Jericho Worrell were the only ones with a lot of juice out here today,” Withers said. “We won’t ever be where we want to be until we come out here with some excitement and enthusiasm anytime we step on this turf. I don’t care if it is practice 20.”

Earlier this week, Withers also announced that four walk-on players have been awarded scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year.

“Anytime you are in camp and have some scholarships available because you haven’t filled your numbers, it is important to recognize some of your walk-ons who really sacrifice, give their effort and pay their own way,” Withers said. “It was nice to recognize Ishmael Davis, Kolby Kolek, A. J. Krawczyk, Louis Rubin and Tyler Watts. We were fortunate enough to do that for some of those guys. The kids were excited for those guys because they had been busting their butt and paying their own way to school with their parents having to sacrifice. So now, we were able to do it for the 2016-17 school year.”

Texas State returns to the practice field on Sunday and will continue their fall camp schedule through next week before beginning school on August 29.
