Bobcats Open Weekend With Big Win Over McNeese

The four hits by the Cowboys were chopped up between Shane Selman, Joe Provenzano, Carson Maxwell and Reid Bourque.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team defeated McNeese State 12-1 in the first game of a weekend series Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Bobcats (2-3) utilized two big innings and a dominant effort on the mound to take down the Cowboys (0-5) in the first meeting between the two programs since 2012.

TXST plated five runs in both the fifth and seventh frames to pull away from the visitors.

Sophomore Nicholas Fraze (1-1) needed just 84 pitches to tie his career-long outing of 7.0 innings. He collected the win after conceding just one unearned run on two hits.

He also struck out six and walked two. The performance was the second time in his career he’s allowed no earned runs, and the two hits were the second-fewest he’s ever allowed in a game.

Redshirt freshman Alex Klitsas came on in relief and tossed the last two innings in his first collegiate appearance. He did not give up a run and allowed just two hits.

Senior Dylan Paul and junior Jaylen Hubbard both finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Hubbard tied his career-high with three runs scored, and he also drove in a run.

Paul had two RBIs and scored once. Senior Derek Scheible and junior Jonathan Ortega both had two hits, and Scheible scored three times and drove in a pair of teammates.

Aidan Anderson (0-2) started on the mound for McNeese and gave up six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings.
