Bobcats Strike Out 10 in Loss

by, Joshua Flanagan, TXST Assistant Director of Sports Information

AUSTIN – Texas State pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts against Texas with Jeremy Hallonquist and Chase Hodson leading the effort with four apiece. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough as the Longhorns knocked eight hits and scored a combined four runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to beat out Texas State, 6-2, dropping the Bobcats to 22-20 on the season.

The Longhorns scored two runs in the opening inning, but the Bobcats struck back in the top of the third with a two-RBI hit from Ryan Newman to tie it up. Texas rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the third, both coming with two outs to regain the lead and added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Newman finished with two hits as did senior Tanner Hill, knocking two doubles.

The Bobcats will host Troy in a three-game set this weekend starting at 6 p.m. Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

WHO STOOD OUT

Ryan Newman / IF/C / Freshman / Brenham, Texas

The freshman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the third inning to tie the game, 2-2. It’s his first multi-RBI game since April against UTSA and his fourth of the season. It’s his ninth multi-hit game of the season and first game with multiple hits since April 6 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Tanner Hill / IF/C / Senior / San Marcos, Texas

Hill also finished 2-for-4, knocking two doubles. Both doubles came with two outs in the inning as he tried to spark a rally. It was his 12th multi-hit game of the season and the first time he’s hit multiple extra-base hits since March 24 against South Alabama, the only other time he has done it all season.

Chase Hodson / RHP / Senior / Richmond, Texas

After walking one, Hodson proceeded to strike out four consecutive batters and retire six in a row in two innings pitched and seven batters faced. Four other times this season Hodson has struck out four or more batters with the most recent being at Georgia Southern on April 2. He is the only Bobcat pitcher this season with more strikeouts than innings pitched (34 strikeouts to 24.0 innings).
