Breaking Update: Fire Departments Battles Grass Fire

Update: Fire Department is reporting that the grass fire is now contained.  Reverse 911 being sent out to area residents that they may return to their homes.  School buses are resuming their normal routes.

Numerous Fire Departments in Hays County are responding to a large grass fire of approximately 150 acres east of Kyle in the area of 2200 Mathias Lane and Peaceful Valley. It is about 80 percent contained at this time.

One house on Golden Cove is known to have been affected by the fire. Residents in part of the affected are being evacuated. Starflight is en route for water drops.

Hays CISD and Hays County Emergency Services are opening Science Hall Elementary School Gym on Bebee Road for any resident who is asked to evacuate. The gym will not serve as an overnight shelter, only as a location for residents to gather at this time.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and take alternate routes due to the large number of response vehicles in the area and the high wind fanning the fire.

More information will be shared as it becomes known.

Media are asked to go to 200 Peaceful Valley as a staging area if planning to report on the fire from the scene.
