Hays County—North Hays County Fire Rescue has fired a probationary firefight for posting photos of a deadly crash to social media.
Early Wednesday, Hays County Firefighters responded to a deadly crash involving four teenagers. One young man, Devin Dienst, was killed; the three other teenagers are in serious condition.
Following an internal investigation, officials concluded that a firefighter posted photos of the accident on a social media site. Friday morning, the district released a statement after the decision to fire the firefighter in question.
“On behalf of its commissioners,” the agency said, “Paid staff and volunteer personnel, the District expresses its most sincere and deepest sympathy and condolences to the relatives and friends who family members were affected by the accident and this incident. The District also wants to convey its sincerest apologies for the intentional and wrongful actions of this terminated individual and reiterate this type of behavior is not and will not be tolerated or condoned by the District.”
The Hays County Emergency Services District No. 6 assured the community that the “wrongful actions” of one employee is not representative of the district’s culture or core values.
According to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, no criminal case has been opened as the incident was handled within the department.
