San Marcos Police have arrested a man accused of breaking into a woman’s apartment and watching her as she slept.

At about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, officers responded to Treehouse Apartments for a burglary of a habitation in progress.

The woman was in bed asleep and woke up to find Chaitanya Cherukuri (DOB09/05/1993) crouched at the foot of her bed.  She grabbed a personal Taser and shouted for her roommate to call SMPD. The victim held Cherukuri at Taser point until officers arrived and detained him.

This is the third time the victim has awoken to find Cherukuri in her apartment.

Cherukuri had a key on his key ring that matched a key to the victim’s apartment.

Cherukuri has been charged with burglary of a habitation (first-degree felony), stalking (second-degree felony), and voyeurism (a Class C misdemeanor).

Police believe he has broken in to other homes in San Marcos. Victims and people with information about these incidents are asked to contact Detective Garner Ames at 512.753.2314.
