On Wednesday, the Calaboose African American History Museum will host an event to commemorate Emancipation Day.
June 19 is an American holiday celebrating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. The emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the former Confederate States of American and is recognized as a state holiday or special of observance in 45 states in the U.S.
This year’s Juneteenth celebration will take place at the Cephas House at 217 MLK Jr. Drive from 6 PM to 8:30 PM.
San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson will read the proclamation commemorating June 19, 2019, as Juneteenth in San Marcos.
Attendees will meet the new executive director of the Calaboose African American History Museum, Vanessa Westbrook, and listen to historian and author, Ms. Joleene Snider, talk about the upcoming book, Britt Johnson: The Man, Myth and the Message.
The museum will be open during the reception for the event.
