San Marcos, TX – The celebration of “Peace & Understanding” for the holiday season continues with a new interactive public art project coming to the Price Center for Third Thursday, Nov. 21, from 4 to 7 PM.
Participants will be invited to make small individual prayer flags featuring symbols and messages of “Peace & Understanding,” which will then be displayed at the Price Center for the duration of the holiday season. The event is free, open to all, and a variety of materials will be provided. (Participants may also bring supplies to use and/or share.)
“We received such inspiring feedback about the theme of our current art show that we felt we had to extend the spirit of it to more people in our community,” said Joan Nagel, Price Center Arts Committee Chair. “We’re hoping lots of folks of all ages and skill levels will join in the event — the more diverse, the better,” she added.
Local artist and leader of the project Cathy Sparks plans to sew all the individually created flags together to be hung on public display at the Price Center for the duration of the holiday season. The goal is to inspire more prayer and thoughts of peace and understanding to creators/viewers of the finished products, and to our community.
The tradition behind modern prayer flags was begun in the seventh century by Buddhist monks who printed words and symbols of peace and harmony on flags as blessings to be sent out to the world with each breeze. Traditional colors – blue for sky/space; white for air/clouds; red for fire; green for water and yellow for earth – will be used. Access to images of eight traditional symbols often used will also be provided. Sparks and other area artists will be on hand with ideas, symbols, and supplies to assist your creations.
Interested parties are encouraged to view the Peace & Understanding art show throughout the Center, which features over 60 original works by more than 40 local artists depicting images, symbols, and concepts of peace, understanding, serenity, cooperation, empathy and compassion.
The Prayer Flag Project will take place upstairs in the Multi-purpose room from 4 to 7 PM. Parents and children are encouraged to attend/create together. The event is free and open to all.
