Hays County, TX –  Hays County Food Bank held its first ever ‘Spring Harvest Healthy Food Drive Challenge’ from April 1 to May 15, 2016. Sixteen registered teams competed to see who could collect the most food for people facing food insecurity in Hays County. Participants collected over 14,000 pounds of food and encouraged the donation of fresh produce and healthier options such as whole grain pastas, canned fruits in light syrup, and low sodium soups.

Century 21 of Buda took first place with 2,792 pounds of food! Employees dropped off 1,050 reusable bags for Buda residents to fill up and later retrieved and delivered them to the Food Bank. Penny Moulder collected the most food donations for the team. Residents from Mountain City, Creekside Park, Garlic Creek, Coves of Cimmaron, Shadow Creek, Cullens Crossing, Sunfield, Meadow Woods, and Blanco Vista participated. This is the third time that Century 21 has done this type of drive for the benefit of the community. Runners up for the challenge were Wallace Middle School of Kyle, who brought in 2,586 pounds and Central Texas Medical Center of San Marcos, who brought in 2,550 pounds. Many hungry residents of Hays County will benefit from the generosity of those involved.

Doug Moreland of Manchaca, Texas created the original, chainsaw-carved trophy for this event. Each year, this trophy will travel to the winner of the ‘Spring Harvest Healthy Food Drive Challenge.’ “We hope have even more teams participate next year. This will really help us sustain our food supply during the summer!” says Communications Coordinator Mallory Raschke.
