Chisum Signs Contract Extension

“Coach Chisum has been at Texas State for four decades now, and she is the epitome of what it means to be a Bobcat. She is a wonderful asset for our athletics department, our university and to the San Marcos community,” Teis said.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University Director of Athletics Dr. Larry Teis announced recently that Head Volleyball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Karen Chisum has signed a three-year contract extension.

The new deal for the longest-tenured Bobcat coach will keep her in San Marcos through the 2020 campaign.

“Coach Chisum has been at Texas State for four decades now, and she is the epitome of what it means to be a Bobcat. She is a wonderful asset for our athletics department, our university and to the San Marcos community,” Teis said. “She is also a member of the T-Association and our Hall of Honor. We are so excited that she has decided to remain with our department for several more years.”

The 2018 season will be the 39th as head coach for Chisum, who enters the year with an all-time record of 868-543-3. She leads the longest-tenured active coaching staff in all of NCAA volleyball (Divisions I-III). Associate head coach Tracy Smith is in her 17th year, while assistant coach Sean Huiet is in his 13th.

Chisum is the second active longest-tenured coach at one school across all three NCAA divisions. She is also the fourth-winningest female Division I coach in NCAA history. She is Division I’s third-winningest active head coach, and she enters 2018 just 32 victories shy of becoming just the seventh coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 900-win plateau.

Under Chisum’s guidance, the Bobcats have won seven regular-season conference championships and eight tournament championships. The Bobcats’ regular-season conference championships under her leadership began with the 1986 Gulf Star Conference crown and also includes Southland Conference titles in 1991, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011.

Chisum has led Texas State to tournament championships both in the SLC (1991, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011) and the Sun Belt Conference (2013).

Her teams earned a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament each year. Texas State also won the SBC West Division title in 2017 and earned its first postseason victory in school history in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

The Bobcats are set to begin the new campaign Aug. 24-25 at the Hampton Inn & Suite Waco North Baylor Invitational. The maroon and gold will face Marquette, Baylor and LSU, all who made the NCAA Championship tournament last year.
