The City of San Marcos Community Services Department is installing 25 pairs of new trash and recycling containers in the parks along the river from City Park to Rio Vista Park.
“With all the raccoons, buzzards and other critters removing trash from the containers and dragging it off, or wind blowing litter out of the containers, Community Services took a proactive step in helping reduce litter going into the river with the new containers,” said William Ford, Assistant Director of Community Services.
After researching national and state park standards this past winter for trash containers, Community Services went out for bid in May for a supplier, and Bearicuda Bin was selected in June.
The “bear-proof” containers are designed to keep anything, up to a large animal, from removing trash from the containers. The containers are marked for garbage and recyclables in accordance with the City’s Solid Waste Master Plan.
“This was a great opportunity to add recycling containers and apply signage that is easy to understand and customized to the anti-litter messages the City has been promoting,” said Amy Kirwin, Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager.
