City of Kyle hosts Guinness World Record attempt at 2021 Pie in the Sky Festival

Staff Reports

KYLE — The City of Kyle is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for gathering the most Kyles, spelled that way, in one place at the annual Kyle Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival on Labor Day weekend at Lake Kyle.

All Kyles that participate in the World Record attempt will get free entrance into the festival throughout the weekend with a photo ID. In previous years, Kyles have come from as far as Massachusetts to participate.

“We are so excited to host Kyle Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival once again and bring back the Guinness World record attempt for the most Kyles in one place,” Special Events Coordinator Sarah Watson said. “We have high hopes that 2021 will be the record-breaking year for the Gathering of the Kyles.”

The gathering will occur on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m., during the morning session. There will be a group photo and official sign-in.

The current Guinness World Record for the largest same name gathering (first name only) belongs to Kupreski Kosci in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a total of 2,325 participants named Ivan. The City of Kyle has previously attempted to break the record three times and 2021 will be the fourth attempt.

“This tradition has been a favorite for several years, and we might come closer than ever before to breaking the record with the group KyleKon officially joining us in our attempt this year,” Gathering of the Kyle Organizer and Kyle Library Director Paul Phelan said.

Additional festival features include pie-eating contests, pie baking contests, vendor markets with artisan crafts and unique products, great food, live music performances and children’s zone activities.

Participants of the Kyle record-breaking attempt can register on-site to receive free entrance. To purchase tickets for other family members and friends, visit pieinthesky.com/tickets. Tickets are available for online $5 per person for morning sessions and $10 per person for evening sessions. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $10 for morning sessions and $20 for evening sessions. Kids 10 and under are always free.
