City Of Kyle Reports High Water Usage Trend, Reminds Residents Of Water Conservation Methods

The City of Kyle reported a trend of high water consumption from water users lately.

According to officials, this is fairly typical for August when the city has had little rain for months. Currently, the city is in Stage 1 water conservation, but if this trend continues, the City of Kyle’s Public Works Water team will recommend moving to Stage 2 in September.

Stage 2 would mean more restrictive watering rules. Officials are asking residents to help the city avoid moving to Stage 2. The high usage trends would have to reverse, though, possibly.

There are some simple ways to use less water – the city is focusing on irrigation since that is where the vast majority of water usage happens in summer months.

These tips apply to commercial businesses and residential customers. (And – bonus – using less water also lowers your water bill.)

1. Check your irrigation system. Fix broken or leaking pipes and sprinkler heads.
2. Use drip irrigation rather than sprinklers whenever possible.
3. Water lawns/property every three to five days, rather than for a short period every day.
4. Water during the coolest parts of the day to minimize losing water to evaporation. (City ordinance allows watering via irrigation system/sprinklers between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m.)
5. Do not water on windy days.
6. Do not over-water in anticipation of a shortage. Soil cannot store extra water.
7. Use shut-off timers or on-off timers, whenever possible. 8. Do not turn on sprinklers and leave for the day.

Residents are encouraged to “get Water Wise & Sewer Savvy.”
