Staff Reports
Texas State University and the City of San Marcos Parks & Recreation Department have partnered to offer and lead free, recreation-based after school programs for Miller and Goodnight Middle School Students.
According to the city, Goal:POST (Partnered Out of School Time) will be hosted at Miller and SLOEP (Spring Lake Outdoor Education Program) will be hosted at Goodnight.
Both programs are set to begin Feb. 26 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 PM for eight weeks. The programs will not meet during the week of Spring Break or on April 9 and 11 due to testing.
Participants will meet in the cafeteria where they will receive a snack and homework assistance followed by recreational activities. Goal:POST will feature games such as Gaga Ball, 9 Square in the Air, dodgeball, and more.
SLOEP participants will experience hands-on outdoor education through kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, geocaching and more.
Students from Texas State University’s Leadership in Recreation and Leisure Services class will plan and lead activities for both programs. This service learning course allows college students to gain real-life experience in a leadership role while simultaneously developing skills in facilitating and programming.
Transportation home is available for a limited number of students. Students must live within regular SMCISD bus routes. Bus riders will be accepted on a first come, first served basis and completed registration forms must be received by Friday, Feb. 15.
Registration forms for each program are available at the respective schools or online at www.sanmarcostx.gov/youthservices. For more information, please contact Catherine Marler at CMarler@sanmarcostx.gov.
