City Of San Marcos issues an additional Rabies Alert after rabid fox was discovered on 1400 Block of Wonder World Dr

The City of San Marcos is issuing a rabies alert after a fox was found exhibiting unusual behavior on the 1400 block of Wonder World Drive July 19 tested positive for rabies.  This is the second case of rabies in San Marcos in less than 30 days.

The previous case happened in late June and involved a dog who was exposed to the illness after being attacked by a fox in the same area.  Tests determined that the fox who attacked the dog was infected with the skunk strain of Rabies virus. Animal control cautions residents to be careful of any skunks in that area, specifically if they are showing abnormal behavior, as with any wildlife.

San Marcos Animal Services officers strongly urge all residents to keep their pets up to date with their rabies vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are required by state law and local ordinances.  The vaccinations are good for one to three years depending on type.

Residents should talk to their veterinarian or visit a local office to ensure their pet is up to date. For any other questions, contact City of San Marcos Animal Services.

San Marcos Animal Services officers are warning the public not to touch or handle foxes because they can transmit rabies. Other common carriers we see in our area are skunks, raccoons, bats, and coyotes.

• Some foxes may be infected with rabies
• Not all sick animals are rabid, and not all rabid animals appear sick
• If you see a fox in a location where a person can reach it please contact Animal Services immediately
