Commissioners Court Proclaims LULAC Week, Honoring National And Local Civil Rights Organizations

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Last week, Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed February 17-23, 2019, as National LULAC Week to honor the 90th anniversary of the civil rights organization.

LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, was the first nationwide Mexican American civil rights organization working to end political disenfranchisement, racial segregation, lack of political representation, and jury exclusion.

According to the proclamation, among its many missions LULAC was deeply committed to school desegregation and was engaged in such pivotal court cases as Delgado v. Bastrop ISD which ended segregation in Texas public schools.

In recent years, LULAC has continued to protect the civil rights of Latinos while expanding opportunities in education, employment, economic advancement, and political influence, and its comprehensive suite of nationwide programs support such worthy causes as affordable housing, health care access, citizenship, and humanitarian relief.

Nearly 50 years ago five charter members founded the local council, which serves all of Hays County. LULAC Council #654 has promoted civil rights, citizenship, educational opportunities, voter registration drives, leadership mentoring, and cultural awareness.
