Cornyn Addresses Solution For DACA Recipients Following White House Meeting

‘What we’re talking about is a restoration of the two great pillars of American immigration policy. One is a belief that legal immigration is good, but that respect for the rule of law was equally important.’

WASHINGTON – Today at a press conference, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) discussed the path forward for a bipartisan solution to address the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program following a meeting at the White House. Excerpts and the video of Sen. Cornyn’s remarks are below.

“Earlier this morning, I was part of a group at the White House with the President talking about what the appropriate response to the ending of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals policy of the Obama administration, what that ought to look like.”

“What we’re talking about is a restoration of the two great pillars of American immigration policy. One is a belief that legal immigration is good, but that respect for the rule of law was equally important. And what we’ve seen in the recent past is a degradation in the rule of law and this idea that anybody and everybody who can get to the United States was welcome here, in spite of the fact we knew that there were people with criminal backgrounds and the like who were taking advantage of our porous borders.”

“So I’m actually pretty encouraged that, on a bipartisan basis, we want to restore our reputation as a country that believes in the rule of law and enforcing our immigration laws, but also demonstrating the kind of compassion that’s always characterized immigration in America: the one consistent with the rule of law. So I was pleased with that meeting.”
