On Thursday, the San Marcos City Council approved the submission of a letter to Governor Greg Abbott.
Council Member Maxfield Baker requested the city council’s support for the letter below to Gov. Abbott.
The letter includes a request for the governor to suspend provisions of state law, added by Senate Bill 4 in 2017 regarding enforcement of immigration laws by local entities.
City Council Member Ed Mihalkanin made a motion to amend the document item #2 to replace the word have with request:
“Have the Attorney General to drop the lawsuit that is blocking paid sick time policies. Paid sick time would be guaranteed for all workers in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio if it were not for the state’s lawsuit. Paid sick time is more important now than ever.”
“Different from the federal government, the state attorney general co-equal to the Governor, Lt. Governor, Comptroller, as a single executive department office,” Mihalkanin said. “Whereas in the United States the attorney general is nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate and is considered an at-will appointee.”
The motion to amend was approved unanimously.
Councilwoman Melissa Derrick thanked Baker for his work in getting the letter brought back before the council in a timely manner.
