For one Danforth Junior High School student, what began as creativity and laser focus transformed into a beautiful butterfly—the winning entry in the 2018 EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens Butterfly Festival Art Contest.
Eighth grader, Brianna Cisneros, won best of show and the honor of having her butterfly as the official artwork for the 2019 EmilyAnn Butterfly Festival t-shirt. Cisneros is learning from Danforth Junior High art teacher Tonya McQuaid.
Wimberley ISD Eighth grader, Brianna Cisneros, won best of show and the honor of having her butterfly as the official artwork for the 2019 EmilyAnn Butterfly Festival t-shirt.“I am very proud of Brianna and all of the students. They get very excited about new projects and are always willing to take on challenges and learn new techniques that give their artwork more depth and originality,” said McQuaid.
Representing Wimberley Independent School District, Cisneros competed with nearly 3,000 students from Wimberley, Blanco, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos and Frisco.
A local artists who juried the competition awarded prizes to a total of 47 WISD students in the categories of fantasy and realistic.
Cisneros won first place in the category of realistic, sketching and coloring in a detailed swallowtail that looks like it is ready to take flight. The artists and the EmilyAnn selected her art among all the first place winners.
“It is a water color painting and I used gel pens to fill in the details. It took me a while, but I’m really happy about the way it turned out,” said Cisneros.
The art contest is the culmination of the annual Emily Ann Theatre & Gardens Butterfly Festival in Wimberley—one of the most attractive events to usher in the spring with the release of thousands of butterflies.
“Congratulations to all the young artists who submitted work for the contest. I am thrilled by the entries each year and I am especially proud of Brianna’s winning realistic entry, which is beautifully drawn and shows such attention to detail in the design. We look forward to welcoming Brianna as the artist of the year to kick off next year’s festival,” said Ann Rolling, EmilyAnn Theatre founder and executive director.
The t-shirt sales and all of the funds collected at the Butterfly Festival benefit the EmilyAnn in their ongoing work of providing year-round entertainment, community festivals, drama classes for youth, and gardens that are open daily to the public.
The 2019 EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens Butterfly Festival is slated for April 27.
