Rotary International President Gary C.K. Huang and his wife CorinnaYao inaugurated the new chapter of the Early Act/ First Knight (EA/FK) at De Zavala Elementary school on January 13, 2015. De Zavala Principal Tim Maresch said that it was a wonderful experience and honor for the school’s Student Council officers to be able to meet the president of one of the world’s largest humanitarian service organizations. Also present were representatives of The Knights of the Guild and Rotary District Governor Janet Livingston.
Huang presented the De Zavala student council president, Sherlyn Sosa, with the school’s charter certificate and personally donated $100 to help start the new chapter. Huang serves as International President for 2014-2015. Born in China, Huang has spent most of his life in Taiwan where he has earned many community service awards.
EA/FK is a character building proprietary program of The Knights of the Guild, and sponsored by Rotary clubs. The program’s purpose is to motivate and teach elementary and middle school age children to “become civil service oriented people during their most formative years.”
San Marcos Rotary clubs also host award-winning programs at Crockett and Travis Elementary schools: Crockett (hosted by The Rotary Club of San Marcos) receiving its charter in the 2008-2009 school year and Travis (hosted by The Rotary Club of Greater San Marcos) beginning in 2009-2010. The De Zavala chapter partners with The Rotary Club of Greater San Marcos. Travis principal Niki Konecki is an Academic Advisor for the state-level organization of The Knights of the Guild.
