De Zavala Student, Lucas Gonzales Chosen For Lone Star Leadership Academy

This week, De Zavala Elementary student Lucas Gonzales is with his classmate Ellie Hurtado in the Dallas/Fort Worth area participating in the 2016 Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. Nominated by his teacher Kayla Shook, Lucas was chosen based on his “outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, and involvement in school and community services,” according to a release sent to De Zavala principal Elena Villanueva.

Lucas is the son of Kyla Brookshier and Jesse DeLeon.

He joined the delegation of students across the state to develop leadership skills while learning Texas history. They are touring significant historic sites in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, in addition to participating in activities at the Summit Climbing Gym (one of his favorite sites so far). Wherever they visit, the students are learning about future career and internship opportunities under the tutelage of Texas educators.

In addition to Gonzales and Hurtado, Goodnight Middle School student Victor Pecina was selected to attend the Lone Star Leadership Academy held in Houston and Galveston.

The non-profit organization Education in Action hosts the leadership camps to empower young people with information and opportunities. According to grade levels, there are camps in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Austin/San Antonio area, and the Houston/Galveston area for students in grades 4-8 who have maintained an 85 or higher grade average, demonstrate leadership ability, are involved in the community, and who are nominated by a teacher.
