District Thanks Vision Van For Its Kind Services

On Monday, May 15, 2017, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District School Superintendent Michael Cardona recognized the Essilor Vision Foundation and Kids Vision for Life (Vision Van) for the services provided to SMCISD elementary school children during February and March of this year.

The school nurses at each campus recommended students to be tested based on their having failed a vision screening test and other criteria including family need.

A total of 292 students were screened by Vision Van staff, and 244 students who needed glasses received free corrective lenses.

Most eyeglasses were made on site, but the more complicated prescriptions were sent to labs for processing.

Optician Rianne Sykes, who was also the program lead, reported that the 244 students who received testing and lenses at approximately $50 per pair of glasses resulted in $12,200 worth of in-kind services provided to SMCISD children.

The program’s success was also possible in large part due to the efforts of the SMCISD team of Deborrah Gauntlett, TVI (Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments), Dyanna Eastwood, RN (Lead District Nurse), all the elementary school principals and campus nurses, the parent liaisons, and Carter Hutson and Randy Holt of the Transportation Department.
