More than 100 Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) recruits were commissioned as Highway Patrol Troopers in recent recruit graduation ceremonies. On hand for the commissioning were Lt. Gov.-elect Dan Patrick, Public Safety Commission Chair Cynthia Leon, the remainder of the Public Safety Commission members and DPS Director Steven McCraw.
Patrick, who was keynote speaker for the event, praised the trooper candidates who “have answered the call of duty, making the selfless commitment to protect and serve this great state.”
During the coming weeks, these new troopers will report to duty stations across Texas. Their first six months of work will include on-the-job training. The trooper graduates began a 23-week training academy in July. They studied more than 100 subjects, including counterterrorism, traffic and criminal law, arrest and control procedures, accident reconstruction, first aid and Spanish. They also were trained in use of force and communication
“These specially-trained men and women will serve as front-line officers dedicated to protecting Texas from crime and all threats facing our state – and we are grateful for their courage and commitment to selfless service,” said McCraw.
