Last year was a frustrating year for Austin drivers, yet a very significant and productive year in advancement along the 183 South project corridor.

Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) has been generating visible results throughout Austin, including major bridge structures at FM 969 (East MLK Jr. Blvd.), Springdale/Manor Road, and the Colorado River.

Drivers will continue to feel frustration this year as well when it comes to Austin’s road construction; however CTRMA has momentum on their side, with plans to bring the enhanced mobility that Austin’s east side has long since been needed.

CTRMA’s future plans call for additional major activities such as paving new general-purpose lanes between Loyola Lane and FM 969, demolishing the old bridge at Montopolis Drive (adjacent to the truss bridge), expanding the existing southbound bridge over the Colorado River, plus the removal and reconstruction of the pedestrian bridge at Manor/Springdale Road, just to name a few.

Under and Over – A New Look For Loyola Lane

Construction crews are changing gears at Loyola Lane.

While a multi-phased reconstruction of this intersection has been ongoing since last fall, the most impactful work began earlier this month—requiring the full closure of the Loyola Lane crossing over US 183.

This condition will remain in place for the next year so crews can excavate the tremendous amount of dirt necessary to build the new expressway.

In its final condition, Loyola Lane will be a bridge over the future 183 South Expressway. The elevation will be the same as it is today, while the 183 South mainlanes will be depressed underneath Loyola Lane.

To help ease congestion and improve traffic flow during this crossing closure, crews have removed the traffic signal and reconfigured the US 183/Loyola Lane intersection with construction barricades.

This allows drivers heading north on US 183 in the right lane to have a dedicated turn lane onto Loyola Lane. In addition, traffic heading west on Loyola Lane has a dedicated right turn lane onto northbound US 183.

Loyola Lane drivers needing to cross US 183 are being routed to the non-signalized turnarounds at Springdale/Manor Road and FM 969 (East Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd).
