Economic Development Leaders Aim To Connect Industry With Schools

Greater San Marcos Partnership Event Brings Together Area Superintendents, Texas Workforce Commission for Conversation on Workforce Pipeline.

San Marcos, Tex. – The quality of a communities’ workforce is the most important competitive asset it can offer current and future employers.

In an effort to support the workforce pipeline that begins in area primary schools, Greater San Marcos Partnership announces the first ever Greater San Marcos Education Summit, which will take place on April 2nd, 2018, from 11 am to 1 pm at Embassy Suites San Marcos Hotel & Conference Center.

The Education Summit will discuss the role of career and technical education in our school districts and how they are preparing the region’s future workforce before graduation.

A Keynote Address will be provided by Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez of the Texas Workforce Commission.

Commissioner Alvarez will discuss the role of apprenticeship programs connecting high schools and industry, followed by a panel of area superintendents discussing programs available to create a future-ready student body.

Panelists include Mr. Michael Cardona, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. Susan Bohn, Lockhart Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. Eric Wright, Hays Independent School District Superintendent, and Dr. Bruce Gearing, Dripping Springs Independent School District Superintendent.

“If a community wants to be economically successful, then we need to support the talent and growth needs of local companies and ensure that opportunities are available for local graduates to stay and live and work,” said GSMP President Adriana Cruz. “Our goal as a regional community is to grow by design and not by default, meaning we are taking strategic and metric-driven steps to ensure that all of the tools in our toolbox are their sharpest, including the future-ready development of our workforce pipeline.”

Attendees at the event will receive the first copies of the inaugural Greater San Marcos Education Report, which takes a look at some of the districts in the Hays and Caldwell Counties region.

Members of the business and education communities are encouraged to attend. Tickets are available online at www.greatersanmarcostx.com/events.
