Event: Bring Household Hazardous Waste Disposal to Driftwood Area

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Hays County and the City of San Marcos are partnering to bring a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal drive-thru event to Driftwood Saturday, April 16. The drive-thru (no need to get out of your vehicle) will be at the Hays County Solid Waste and Recycling Center, 100 Darden Hill Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no charge for the HHW disposal.

“Our goal is to have a HHW disposal event that is convenient for people living in the northern part of Hays County,” Amy Kirwin, Solid Waste Program Coordinator for the City of San Marcos, said. “The City of San Marcos has a permanent drop-off location at 630 E Hopkins (located behind City Hall)) that is open every Tuesday and Friday from Noon to 3:30 p.m. for all Hays County residents, but we realize that isn’t convenient for everyone in the county.”

“Last year we had a great turnout from local residents and we are looking forward to partnering with the city to host another event,” said Hays County Natural Resources Manager Brooke Leftwich.

Examples of items accepted include household cleaners, antifreeze, motor oil, latex and oil pants, pesticides, weed killers, batteries, oil filters, cell phones and fluorescent bulbs. Among the items NOT accepted are tires, medical waste, empty containers, compressed gas, cylinders, computers, TVs and waste generated by businesses. Up to 10 five-gallon buckets of materials can be dropped off per vehicle.

For a detailed list of items that will and won’t be accepted visit www.sanmarcostx.gov/hhw.

To get to the Recycling Center from Ranch Road 12, go east on FM 150 approximately 4.5 miles and turn left on Darden Hill Road (CR 162). For more information, contact Hays County Solid Waste and Recycling Department at 512-858-9515 or email recycling@co.hays.tx.us.
