Hays County, TX – A new Family History Center is about to open in San Marcos. Run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (LDS), the center will be a premiere genealogy resource in Central Texas.
An open house celebrating the new family history center is set for 10 a.m.2 p.m. August 13 at the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, located at 3751 Trail Ridge Pass in San Marcos.
The event, co-sponsored by the San Marcos/Hays County Genealogical Society and the Hays County Historical Commission, will feature two special presentations. At 10 a.m. Stu Hoyt, president of the William Hightower Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, which is based in New Braunfels and serves Comal, Hays, and Guadalupe Counties, will speak about the Sons of the American Revolution and Lineage Societies in General. Mr. Hoyt will present in full Colonial Military gear.
At 11 a.m. Betty Harrison will speak about her new book, Images of America: Kyle. The detailed book features images that capture the spirit of Kyle and its citizens over the years with its rich history.

The Center also includes five computers, three microfilm readers, one microfiche reader, a digital camera system to photograph microfilm/microfiche, and a multifunction printer/scanner/copier. The center has the ability to order any of the films and fiche available through the FamilySearch Catalog. It also has over a thousand films in-house on permanent loan, as well as a generous collection of genealogy resource books and helps.
Finally, the Family History Center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions.
Tours of the facility will be available to the general public, as well as a light refreshment.
