Freer city officials are optimistic that the newly adopted federal budget will soon fund construction of an updated $33.4 million U.S. Border Patrol station in that city.

Built in 1984, the U.S. Border Patrol station in Freer was designed for 25 patrol agents, but that station is now occupied by 122 agents and more are expected to be assigned. The 27,000-square-foot facility in Freer will be able to support 250 agents.

Other additions include parking for 120 vehicles, a secure entryway, impound lot, kennels, fueling station, car wash, maintenance space and a shed facility for all-terrain vehicles.

Because of the serious overcrowding at the facility, border patrol officials ranked expansion of the Freer facility as the second priority for capital investment.

The current priority is to build a new facility in Brown Field, Calif. that is included in the 2018 budget. Funding for the new border patrol station in Freer is still awaiting final approval.
