Fiery & Fatal collision in Seguin claims three lives

SEGUIN – Seguin Police and Seguin Fire/EMS responded to a fiery, fatal collision on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 26 involving 5 vehicles at I-10 East near the Hwy 123 Bypass.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:56 pm. A preliminary investigation reveals that a semi-truck transporting meat products was traveling down the roadway when it was cut-off by vehicles attempting to avoid TxDOT workers in the area.

The driver of the semi-truck braked abruptly to avoid a collision, causing the truck to lose its load on the highway, resulting in slick road conditions.

Another semi-truck heading the same way swerved to avoid the crash but collided into a guardrail. The semi-truck burst into flames on impact and in a chain reaction, 4 additional vehicles were involved.

Two patients were transported to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center where they were treated for various injuries. Two persons involved in the collision was treated and released at the scene. One Seguin Police Officer was treated and released from Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained trying to heroically save the victims.

Three individuals died at the scene. The victims have been identified as Jason A. Howell (48, San Antonio), Jason N. Sanchez (36, San Antonio), and Joseph D. Cline (37, Marion).

Justice of the Peace Daryl Hunter has ordered autopsies on the victims, and they have been transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. The next of kin has been notified. 

An investigation into the accident is ongoing by the police department.
