Filing Period Begins For San Marcos City Council Seats

The filing period for candidates interested in running for San Marcos City Council in the November 8, 2016 general and special election officially begins on Saturday, July 23 and will continue until Monday, August 22.

 

The City Clerk’s office is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed during the lunch hour from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.) to accept candidate filings. Anyone interested in filing may pick up a candidate packet at the City Clerk’s office in San Marcos City Hall at 630 E. Hopkins or download the forms from the City Clerk’s website at www.sanmarcostx.gov/elections

 

Up for election are the positions of Mayor, City Council Place 1 (currently Lisa Prewitt), City Council Place 2 (currently Jude Prather),  and a vacancy for the remainder of John Thomaides term of office of City Council Place 3.

 

Under the San Marcos City Charter, if you are a current city council member and file to run for mayor, you must resign your current seat. The City Charter also states the term for city council seats is three years. All seven members serve in at-large positions.

 

The City Council is expected to formally call the election at its August 16 meeting. The City election is held in conjunction with the county, state and federal general elections.
