Finish Safe In 2019: Reminder To Slow Down And Plan Ahead

Wimberley Independent School District staff, teachers, students and administrators are looking forward to an incredible finish to an excellent school year.

As parents and community members travel to all the academic awards ceremonies, class parties, sports practices, spring shows and many other end-of-year traditions, it’s also a time to keep safety top of mind.

Wimberley ISD superintendent, Dwain York and the team at the District emphasize the importance of planning ahead, slowing down and paying attention to school buses unloading and loading precious cargo, and also heeding school zone speed limits.

“We are all excited to celebrate so many amazing accomplishments of students at all four campuses. This is a testament to the partnership we have with parents in all areas from PTO volunteers, to athletic boosters to room parents and so many others, who together with the WISD team assure the District shines in all areas,” said Dwain York, Wimberley ISD Superintendent of Schools.

Note that the campuses have different school zone hours. It is important to look for the flashing lights. Please take note of these times.

School Zone Hours:

Expect to obey school zone hours during these times, because of the different dismissal times at WISD campuses:

Morning: 7 to 8:15 AM

Afternoon: 2:45 to 3:30 PM

School Bus Rules According to Texas Law:

· Drivers must stop when a school bus extends its stop sign or turns on their flashing red lights.

· When a school bus is stopped, drivers must come to a complete stop on all lanes in both traveling directions; this is with the exception of a road with a raised median or barrier. On-coming traffic on the other side of the road from where the bus is stopped, does not have to stop.

· It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children from either direction if you’re on an undivided road. In Texas, you can expect to pay a fine of at least $500.

· Vehicles must stop at least 500 feet from a stopped school bus with an extended stop sign.

Because of the unpredictability of the weather during this time of year, it is important for parents to check their Skyward accounts to make sure all contact information is correct.

In case of an early release, a cancellation or a late arrival day, the District will deploy several forms of communication with parents including a phone call, text, email, and a website post. Campus Security

As a reminder, visitors to any WISD campus are required to present a valid ID and wear a badge for the duration of their visit.

“This time of year, visitors are in a hurry to get to their events, so please plan ahead since the badge and access rules are strictly enforced all campuses” said York.

Students at Danforth Junior High School and Wimberley High School also must wear their badge during the duration of the school day.
